Choosing Kitchen Accessories

Article by James Tandy

Why you must decide on your accessories before you start your kitchen design project.

It's so important to make a kitchen accessory and appliance list before you start work on your new kitchen design, especially if you have a small kitchen.

This is the task that most people put off until the last minute because it doesn't seem important when you are making decisions about building work and kitchen fixtures. Lets take a look at some of the reasons why putting it off is a bad idea and why you might wish you had paid more attention to it at the start.

Are your accessories going to match your fixtures?

If you don't make your kitchen accessory list at the start of your project how will you know if the fixtures that you order will match with your style in accessories? You might find that the stainless steel kitchen accessory look that you grow to love later in the project simply doesn't go with the style and colour of the Worktops, cabinets and other fixtures that you chose weeks ago.

Take time in the design stage of your remodeling project to really understand the whole picture. Make sure that you have considered every little detail including matching accessories to fixtures.

Will the matching accessories be available when you go to buy?

Perhaps you did pick out the accessories at the same time that you chose the big stuff but you decided not to purchase them at the time. There's plenty of time to get them after all but you might find that the brass kitchen accessory that you had picked out has been made obsolete by the manufacturer and is no longer available. What do you do then?

Whenever you can buy everything together at the same time. That way you have the best chance of it all matching and you know that it's available when you order it.

Are you sure that you have enough room for the kitchen accessories?

Will that large kitchen accessory fit in your small kitchen when you have installed the fixtures? Even though it's an accessory and in theory could go anywhere, you might find that you need to think about leaving some floor or wall space for it in the kitchen design.

Lets take the kitchen roll holder as an example. You've picked out a wall-mounted piece but have you thought about where it's going to be fixed on the wall? I know of more than one small kitchen project that neglected to consider this. When everything had been fitted and the kitchen looked lovely someone says "where's the kitchen roll then?"

Your kitchen accessory and appliance list isn't as important and crucial as some of the other decisions you have to make at the start of your small kitchen design project but a little thought and action at the start can save you a lot of time, energy and money later on.

Ideas on how to make a kitchen accessory list.
