Betterdiy has two websitesArticle by Jane WellsBetterdiy has two websites The Betterdiy.com website was launched in October 2005 with the aim of enabling customers anywhere on mainland UK to purchase complete, bespoke bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens, windows, external doors and conservatories or individual units direct, for their own installation or installation by their own experienced fitters, and without the need to go to a physical showroom. Working remotely was very much a new venture for the people behind Betterdiy but seen to be very much the way forward for the 21st Century. The design and content of the website were based partly on a ready made package but mainly on the results of much research to see how other retail sites performed and what customers expected or would ideally like to see from such a site. As with all new ventures, ideas and expectations evolved as the Betterdiy website was used both by the people behind it and by browsers and customers. Betterdiy.com is an excellent showcase for the ranges offered and much positive feedback has been received about the quality of the information and images displayed. However, there are limitations which cannot be addressed by modifications to the existing website structure. To create a new website under the Betterdiy.com banner would mean building it off line and taking the existing site away from the public domain whilst the new version was launched, with the consequent impact on search engine visitation, rankings and most importantly customer accessibility. It was quickly decided that the best route was for the Betterdiy.com website to be maintained and for version two to be built alongside it but in a live situation so that as new pages were added and enhancements made, Search Engines would be able to view these straight away rather than being presented with a new, large and complex website in one go. Whilst Betterdiy.com continues to attract many, very welcome, customers and visitors, version two, now known as betterdiy.co.uk, has a number of significant advantages both to customers and the people behind the name. Looking firstly at advantages to customers, in developing the new website, a lot of emphasis has been put on it being as user friendly as possible. As a result, the response times and page and image load times are very quick. The quality of the images and the amount of information available to the customer in one hit have been increased. Betterdiy.co.uk offers the facility to log-in and be registered as a customer. The site also offers the facility for this log-in to be remembered the next time the customer visits. The site gives all customers, logged-in named customers or guests, the facility to browse the site and obtain detailed quotations which can be saved without converting them to confirmed orders. Guests can then log-in and register as customers at a convenient time, access a previously saved quote and convert it to a confirmed order. In particular, the kitchen range pages have been enhanced such that a diagram of the unit design appears when the mouse hovers over a unit/size. Also it is now possible to add more than one unit at a time to the shopping basket, greatly reducing the time taken to obtain a quote or complete an order, thereby reducing the frustration of having to hop to and fro. Now turning to advantages to the website owners, betterdiy.com provides reasonably detailed usage statistics consistent with the ready made package on which it is based. The statistics provided by betterdiy.co.uk are more detailed and permit the identification and tracking of trends in usage. Maintenance of our customer and contact database is enhanced by the customer log-in facility. This enables Betterdiy to monitor usage and buying patterns and also to target special offers and newsletters. Ease of maintenance of the new site has been a priority for the owners. Adding and updating of products and updating of prices has been made more straightforward and less time-consuming. Betterdiy intend to maintain both websites, although it is intended that betterdiy.co.uk will be the more dynamic, flexible site in line with its construction principles.
